In revisiting this experience, one thing I’ll never forget is how the community at large rallied to support me and my family in my journey with breast cancer. There were so many resources available to me. The list is long - family, friends, an excellent team of doctors, the mothers in the Pleasanton Mother’s Club, my wig stylist, the ‘Look Good Feel Better’ program, ValleyCare Cancer Library staff, materials and programs, oncologist nurses, and fellow cancer patients and survivors. The funds raised through walks such as the Bras for Cause provide critical dollars to support this list as well as for new treatments and overall patient wellness programs – such as nutrition, acupuncture, and healing workshops. As more and more cancer knowledge and resources evolve, there is an understanding that we not just focus on the treatment of the disease, but that we need to look at treating the person as a whole.
Two years ago, shortly after completing my chemotherapy and radiation treatments for breast cancer, I participated in this walk as a start to help bring an end to this disease. I felt I needed to find a way to come out of my treatments with a positive impact – to find meaning in my unexplained diagnosis perhaps? Little did I know that I would be so touched, inspired and thankful for the enthusiasm, support and generosity of friends, family and even strangers. Today my motivation remains strong because I never want to hear my daughter say to me, 'Mom, I have breast cancer.'
Collectively, I know we can continue the positive steps in cancer detection, prevention and wellness, and ultimately find a cure. I am honored to walk with such a wonderful group of inspirational people and as my brother said to me ‘Maybe one of the dollars raised in this walk is the dollar that finds a cure'."
